Kamloops Rattlers and the Kelowna battled hard all evening switching leads at various points but in the end Kamloops was victorious, winning 7 to 6 to send the Raiders golfing for the remainder of the 2010 season. Kelowna ran into serious penalty problems in the second period but came back in the third to take a two goal lead but were unable to hold it. Kamloops capitalized on a couple of Kelowna’s lapses to retake the lead by a goal. Kelowna’s power play was shut down by Kamloop’s defence as Kelowna had a great chance to get back into the game late in the third.

Kamloops moves on to play the Armstrong Shamrocks in a best of three series for the league championship Rowcliffe Cup which replaces the former Shaw Cup for Okanagan Extreme Lacrosse Supremacy. This will be the first time in five years that Kelowna will not be in the final but players and coaches already are looking forward to next season.

The Raiders would like to extend their sincere thank you to all of their wonderful fans and generous sponsors!

The Raiders blew a one goal lead going into the third and managed to rack up 33 minutes in penalties to lose to the Armstrong Shamrocks 8 to 7 last night at Norval Arena in Armstrong. The Raiders played a consistent game, as did the Shamrocks, but questionable calls in the third period forced the Raiders to implement their penalty kill for most of the third with one, two or three players occupying the penalty box at one time. The Shamrock’s power play took advantage of just about every Raider penalty to come back and win the game. Ryan Spring and Jared MacLennan each scored two for the Raiders while Dan Giger and Logan Strom each notched three for the Shamrocks.

Armstrong and Kelowna are now both tied for first in the league, with one game remaining in regular season play for both teams. Kelowna’s next home game is next Friday, July 16, 8pm at Kelowna Memorial when they host the Kamloops Rattlers.

With Armstrongs’s loss to Kamloops last evening coupled with the Raiders win over Vernon at Kelowna Memorial Arena (10 to 6), the Raiders are finding themselves sitting on top of the league for the first time this season. Raider head coach Steve Begley was pleased with the overall effort of his team as they maintained a lead throughout all three periods. The Raiders took full advantage of their power plays and penalty killers led by Darcy Leach and Braden Renner shut down Vernon’s big shooter, Shane Sargent who did manage two goals during the match. Kelowna’s tough defence led by Travis Lee, Owen Barski, Graham Hartl, Victor Wiens, Jarrett Neigum backed by goaltender Cam Needham proved to be too much for the Tigers who did play their best game of the season against their valley rivals.

Pairs of goals from Kelowna came from rookies Joe Brown and Jared MacLennan with singles from Eli Wood-Sowcroft, Colin Sherbanuk, Deryk McPhail, Braden Renner, Jarrett Neigum and Kyle MacLennan.

For Vernon, pairs came from Shane Sargent and Jorden Schocter and singles added by Kirk Krause and Tanner Skolrood.

Teams have the Canada Day weekend off and Kelowna will be in Armstrong to take on the Shamrocks on July 9.

Mark Jurista and the speedy Kamloops Rattlers were out-checked and out-scored as the Kelowna Raiders crushed their opponents 13 to 5 in a fast-paced, exciting game. The score was tied at the end of the first period but the Raiders came out in the second and scored 5 goals to throw the North Okanagan team completely off balance. Superb goaltending by Kelowna’s Cory Fearon backed up with a rock solid defence kept the Kamloop’s shooters frustrated and shut down their usually powerful power play all evening. Joe Brown, Jarrett Neigum and Kyle MacLennan all played brilliant two way lacrosse for all three periods, Brown assisting on three goals, Neigum assisting on two and notching one and MacLennan scoring two.

Ryan Spring’s return to the Raider line-up proved detrimental to the Rattlers. Spring scored 4 goals and assisted on two to lead the Raider scoring. Other goals came from rookies Deryk McPhail 2, Braden Renner 1, Victor Wiens 1 and one each from veterans Pho Heng and Steve Plasko.

Kamloops scoring included two each from Nathan Woldum and Mark Jurista and one from Brett Baker.

The win puts the Raiders in a first place tie with the Armstrong Shamrocks. The next home game is next Friday, June 25, against Vernon.

Jeff Connaughton and Gord Phillips were both recognized by spokesperson Pat Bonin representing the Okanagan Extreme Lacrosse League at last night’s lacrosse game in Vernon. Both men received commemorative plaques expressing the appreciation of the players and fans for their outstanding contributions in organizing, refereeing, and coaching that the two have made to Men’s Senior Lacrosse in the valley over the years. Both were instrumental in forming the current league which continues to expand in the Thompson Okanagan. The two are also associated with promoting minor lacrosse and are continuing to volunteer their time to make lacrosse an exciting, fun sport for not only children but adults as well. Their contributions have been and will continue to be appreciated by the lacrosse community in promoting fitness, fair play and entertainment in our interior communities.

Despite only playing with 14 runners, Raider rookies Jordan Innes, Jared MacLennan, Deryk McPhail, Braden Renner along with Jarrett Neigum each scored to outpace the host Kamloops Rattlers at a wet Kamloops Memorial Arena last evening with in a 5 to 4 win. Kamloops scoring was led by their captain Mark Jurista with three goals and speedy Chris Phillips notching one. Both goalies, Cory Fearon for the Raiders and Mike Smith for the Rattlers were sensational in net keeping the overall game score low with a high shot total for the game. Kelowna’s defence was hard to penetrate from the opening faceoff winning loose ball battles and keeping Kamloops big shooters off balance all evening. The win puts Kelowna in second place in the league in hot pursuit of the Armstrong Shamrocks.
